  • 300g green beans 
  • pinch of salt


  • 2 Tbsp black sesame seed powder 
  • 4 tsp brown sugar 
  • 4 tsp soy sauce

Goma-ae is a Japanese side dish of vegetables in a sesame seed paste. Here I’m using black sesame seed powder for its unique nutty taste. This dish also works well with broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus or any seasonal vegetable.

To make the paste, mix together black sesame seed powder, brown sugar and soy sauce. Set aside.

Bring a pan of water to the boil, add beans and a pinch of salt and cook for 2–3 minutes. Drain beans and cut off the ends. Set aside to cool.

Once beans have reached room temperature, add the sesame seed paste to the beans.

Serve in a bowl to share.
