Wairau River Wines

In 1978, Phil & Chris Rose planted the first vines on the edge of the Wairau River in Marlborough. They almost didn’t get to plant anything. Their farming neighbours, suspicious of this ‘new winemaking thing’, kept them tied up in legal battles for over two years. Eventually, wine was the winner. The vines loved the stony soil and being close to the river. That first vineyard grew to become 16 vineyards; today Wairau River Wines exports its wines to customers all over the world. Growing up on a vineyard certainly rubbed off on the Rose children. Sam Rose is Head Winemaker. His brother Hamish is the Viticulturalist, and his partner Kristy handles HR. Eldest daughter Pip runs the restaurant, while her husband Parky is CEO. Caroline and her chef partner Tane are responsible for the incredible food offering at the restaurant and Anna and her husband Paul grow grapes for the winery. These days Phil & Chris can relax and watch the new generation take WRW to the next stage of its journey.
