Love Food Hate Waste

Food waste is a major issue in New Zealand, although you may not realise it. Every time we throw away food – our bread crusts or last night’s leftovers – it adds up. Love Food Hate Waste wants to change this.

A typical NZ household throws away $560 worth of uneaten food every year. Or in Wellington currency, that’s 124 flat whites worth every year!

There’s heaps of easy things you can do to help you reduce food waste:

• Is your fridge cool enough? It should be below 5°C to keep food fresh for longer. Use a thermometer to check if in doubt.
• Know your dates: ‘use by’ date is about food safety, ‘best before’ just refers to when it’s at its freshest.
• Take leftovers for lunch, or add them to a pasta or pizza!
• Turn surplus fruit into delicious smooothies
• Plan your meals and make a shopping list!
• Keep your potatoes in the dark
• Store your bread in a freezer
