The Waipara Valley Shines Through For Aromatics

THURSDAY 10TH MARCH 2016

The richness, zing and complexity of the Waipara Valley has been bottled up and illustrated to perfection, in the recent release of the 2015 Waipara Hills Pinot Gris and 2015 Waipara Hills Riesling.

Waipara Hills Winemaker, Simon McGeorge talks fondly about his work with aromatics; the zing and the drive of Riesling, the rich and subtle tone of Pinot Gris.

Working with his hands has always been his style, and Simon has been carving out this passion since he took up the post as Waipara Hills Winemaker in 2006.

“Each year brings a new set of challenges which not only put their stamp on that vintage’s wines, but also teaches us something new. The Waipara Valley, with its cool dry climate, good sunshine and long growing season, promotes wines with full varietal expression which are renowned for their intense flavours and complexity.

Waipara certainly has its own personality which I see shining through year after year and across varietals. Aromatic richness, palate weight and spicy, savoury characters for me really define what this region is all about.”

The Riesling vines thrive at their home of The Mound vineyard, where the layer of clay over deep gravels adds complexity while retaining precision in the wine. Bursting with red apple, lime and mandarin aromas, with a touch of ginger spice, this wine provides a great match to barbequed pork marinated in lime juice, due to its rich and bold style which delivers a crisp and lingering finish.

The Pinot Gris vines have flourished throughout the valley, particularly in the deep free draining soils of the Home Block and Deans vineyards.

“The oldest vines on the Home Block have a richness and weight which is undeniable while the variety of new clones on the Deans Vineyard has been a real gem when it comes to blending options over the past seven years.” said Simon.

The richness of this wine is expressed through aromas of pear and quince with a hint of nougat, leaving a taste of ginger and crisp apple finish. A delicious match with barbequed prawns accompanied by an Asian dipping sauce.

2015 Waipara Hills Pinot Gris and 2015 Waipara Hills Riesling are available from all good wine retailers and will be available for tastings at The Food Show in Christchurch 8th – 10th April. RRP $21.90.
