Method
If you keep a jar of Alison's sunflower seeds in your pantry you
can produce tasty, crunchy snacks in five minutes, with the minimum
of time and effort.
Put 1 cup of sunflower seeds in a large, dry frying pan, drizzle
with 1 tsp of sesame oil or any other oil you like, and heat,
shaking the pan regularly, for 4 - 5 minutes until the seeds turn
from grey-green to light brown. Don't expect them all to be exactly
the same colour. Sprinkle with a little salt, and leave the pan on
a cold surface to cool, then serve with drinks.
Variation - Garlic Pumpkin Seed Snacks
Put 1 cup of Alison's pumpkin seeds in a large fry pan on medium
heat. Add 1 tsp olive or canola oil and rub it through the seeds
with your fingers. Heat, stirring frequently, until the seeds have
browned lightly. Turn off the heat and sprinkle with ½ - 1 tsp
garlic salt (to taste). Eat warm or cold, as snacks, putting any
leftovers in a jar with a tightly covered lid.
Notes
Store prepared sunflower seeds in an airtight jar. If you are a
bread-maker, add about ½ cup of toasted sunflower seeds to your
next loaf of bread. They give it a lovely texture and flavour.
Sprinkle toasted sunflower seeds over salads just before
serving.
