Almost every country has a meal that is made from dough and meat. Whether its dumplings, steamed buns or pierogis, simple ingredients can combine to make delicious dishes. Pelmeni, the Russian style of dumplings, are not as well-known as Polish pierogis or Chinese dumplings in New Zealand, but they are a great choice for a fast yet tasty meal.
World of Dumplings began as a family business recently when we found out that there were no businesses in New Zealand that produced this wonderful type of food.
Using our own family recipes we began supplying dumplings to the Russian community and delicatessens in Auckland. We’d like to share our unique traditional recipes and high quality of food with people in New Zealand.
A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. It's served in every Russian restaurant, cooked in homes across all of the country and every family likes to think it has its own special recipe.
So what is pelmeni? Basically, it’s a type of dumpling consisting of a particular filling that is wrapped in thin dough. The fillings differ but essentially they are minced meat (pork, beef or sometimes lamb), chicken or fish. Some herbs, onions and black pepper could be used in the seasoning.
The great thing about these dumplings is that they are so easy to cook its ridiculous! All you have to do is empty the pack of frozen pelmeni into a pot of boiling water, wait for 3 minutes (do not forget to add salt, of course) and you are done! A child could do this when he or she gets back from school! Imagine all the time you can save by cooking this convenient, yet healthy meal.
The Food Show provides you with a brilliant opportunity to come and try samples of our food and buy some frozen dumplings to take home with you! Come see us at stand 171 in Artisan alley at the Food Show and we will be happy to assist you.
