Te Horo Foods is a family owned and operated business on the Kapiti Coast just north of Wellington. We have a purpose built jam kitchen ensconced in the middle of our orchard creating a range of handmade jams using traditional recipes and 100% New Zealand fruit that taste and have the texture of homemade jam. We aim to produce a simple, wholesome, flavoursome product.
Te Horo Foods uses 100% premium tree-ripened New Zealand fruit, unbleached cane sugar and just a trace of butter to produce each of its seven varieties of Te Horo jams and marmalade. There are no preservatives, additives or artificial colour added. The jam is made in small preserving pans cooked over gas burners in individual batches. During cooking the jam is stirred constantly with big wooden spoons.
Using 100% New Zealand fruit is a non-negotiable aspect of Te Horo jam-making. We not only believe New Zealand fruit tastes better, but it ensures food safety and sustainability. Fruit is grown on our property or on reliable grower partners properties, hand harvested and graded over the summer months, then stored on-site in a large freezer for cooking up all year round.
The company’s specialty, Blackberry jam, is made from fruit grown on our orchard in Te Horo. Te Horo is known for its gourmet food production because the light is very intense and the climate is temperate, with cool nights and hot days. So fruit slowly ripen and develop a deep colour and flavour. This is especially the case with dark fruit, such as blackberries, which have an even higher concentration of antioxidants and anthocyanins than blueberries.
Raspberry is the company’s biggest seller, with other berry jams such as Strawberry, Blackberry and Boysenberry also popular. Plum jam is appreciated by those who prefer a slightly tarter jam and the Apricot has intense flavour reminiscent of dried apricots. The grapefruit and lemon marmalade is a hit with fans of bitter marmalade.
